A Floating House

In Aji Island, Japan, there are many vacant houses with no owners because of depopulation and the consequence of the earthquake in 2011. Mochida referred to them as “floating houses” and actually floated one of them to create her work.

“In Aji Island there are many vacant houses. However, I heard that there were more vacant houses before 2011. After the earthquake, many vacant houses were demolished by making use of a subsidy for demolition and removal of damaged houses. This opportunity was made good use of it, because demolition in the island causes great burdens. It needs to make workers come from outside to the island and to carry waste materials by ship.
Among them, however, some houses remains untouched. They could not be demolished for some reasons, such as ownerlessness. Someone who lived there before, his child, his partner, or his sister must have inherited the house, but they never came home. This house is floating.
It is floating on air, like a ghost, facing its familiar expressionless face to the street.” (2019, Atusko Mochida)

宮城県石巻市の沖合に位置する網地島では、過疎化や震災によって、持ち主を失った空き家が多くある。それを「宙に浮いた家」と考えた持田は、その中のひとつの家を実際に浮かせ、作品として作り上げました。

「網地島には無人の家が数多く存在する。しかし、過去にはさらに多くの空き家があったそうだ。震災後、被災した家屋を解体撤去するための補助金をもとに、それまで空き家だった家の多くが取り壊された。島で家を壊すためには、作業に携わる人を島外から呼ぶだけではなく、廃材も船で運ばなくてはならない等負担が多い為、この機会は有効に活用されたという。
しかしその中でも、持ち主がわからない物件や、何らかの事情で解体に踏み切れなかった家たちはそのまま残された。
かつてはそこに住んでいた人や、その子どもの、伴侶の、妹の、だれかが、その家を継いでいるはずではあるが、彼らがその家に帰ることはない。
家は宙に浮いている。
地に足がつかず、まるで幽霊のように、見慣れたのっぺらぼうの顔を通りに向けながら。」（2019、持田敦子）
