Structures” is inspired by Mochida’s favorite building in Solitude, The Barn and the old trees that it is made with. The work is in conversation with The Barn through the architectural language of the half-timber building method, which exposes how the space is built. Mochida’s practice employs the form of a house as a metaphor to think about the different roles individuals assume within families. In “Structures” she explores this with wooden slats that stand at slight angles; lean against each other; find a semblance of balance with a foundation rock; and at times connect or not.
